Honey & Coconut. A Lip Butter.

apothecary Jan 21, 2025

The first batch surprised me with its silken texture, softer than traditional lip balms. Instead of trying to force it into what I thought it should be, I sat with it awhile. Sometimes our medicines guide us to unexpected purposes. This gentle blend revealed itself as more than a lip treatment—it became what I now call Honey Coconut Love Butter, equally suited for tender moments between partners.

This is how plant medicine often works: we begin with one intention, and the blend shows us another path. It's a reminder to stay open to the wisdom that emerges through our hands as we work.As always, the plants know best. Their wisdom reminds us to find beauty in what we don’t expect, to embrace the fluidity of life’s transformations. Whether you choose to craft this recipe as a nourishing lip butter or as a love butter for sacred connection, it holds the essence of care, intention, and sweetness.

For those who cannot use honey—whether due to allergies or other reasons—the message is clear: adapt the recipe. Honor your unique needs and those of your loved ones. The medicine is not in the honey itself but in the love and intention you pour into each step of the process.

I source most of my ingredients from Mountain Rose Herbs, a company whose ethics and commitment to sustainability align with the principles of reciprocity we hold dear. I’ve trusted them for decades, and their offerings carry the quality and care that make creations like this one truly special. If you’re called to craft this recipe, I encourage you to gather your materials from those who honor the earth and her cycles.

To hold your lip butter, I recommend small tins, and for the love butter, a glass jar that feels beautiful in your hands will hold the energy well. Whichever version you choose, may it remind you of the sweetness of life, the connection we share with one another, and the abundant blessings the earth offers us when we walk with reverence and love.

May this creation bring joy, nourishment, and harmony into your life.

The tins I use for the lip butter are here. If you opt for making the love butter, these jars are great!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in your double boiler and cook on low heat until everything is just melted.

  2. Remove from heat and allow to cool for about 5 minutes or so.

  3. Then whisk your mixture With your fork or whisk for 30 seconds every couple of minutes for 20 minutes. If you prefer, put your mixture in an old blender and pulse for 5 seconds 3x. The latter is more messy but does seem to mix it nicer, in my opinion. (This will combine your lipid and water soluble ingredients.)

  4. Pour your mixture into your tins/bottles and allow to set over the next 24 hours. If you want to do this more quickly, you can put the tins/bottles in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to make it set faster.

  5. This mixture will naturally be harder in cooler temperatures and softer in warmer temperatures due to the coconut butter.

  6. Store at room temperature and use within one year

  7. ENJOY!!
