Ceremonial Cacao. A Simple Recipe.

During the global pandemic I moved our cacao ceremonies to be online. During this time many questions came in from, “Can I use cocoa powder?” to “How do I make the cacao?”. The first question can be answered if you click here.

The second question is one that I love to share with people. Making cacao is such a special ceremony in itself. Before you make your cacao, set your space up for it. The more intention we put into the whole process, the more we can experience the gifts that the medicine is offering.

Intention is everything….

When we put love and intention into anything we do, it’s undeniably richer and more fulfilling. I’ve had cacao a couple times when I was not really paying attention and just drinking it without thought and although I could feel the medicinal properties, I didn’t experience it to the fullest because I wasn’t tuning into the magic that was being offered. So pour your love into the preparation practice. That energy will return to you infinitely. Sing, dance, and think loving thoughts as you are preparing your space to make your cacao.

Make sure your kitchen is clean….

A physically and energetically clean space is so important. Think about it… how do you feel after you declutter and clean your home? Most of us feel clear and calm. The reason for this is because a clean space makes room for clean energy. So do yourself a favor, clean and put away your dirty dishes, sweep the floor, and wipe down your counters.

Smudge your space….

You can do this with plant resins like copal or frankincense, or dried plant material like sage or cedar. I also use palo santo sparingly. Smudging the room will clear any dense, stagnant, or negative energies that may be lingering around the nooks and crannies. Smudging is an ancient practice used by indigenous people to clear the energies that we don’t necessarily see but that can take up space. This energy can affect how we feel and can often be misinterpreted as our own if we are unaware of it. Smudging is a powerful tool to really clear your energy and the energy around you to open it up to higher energies that you would like to call in or are already existing within you.

After you make your cacao, I recommend even blowing a bit of your burning plant material from smudging into your cacao. As you do this, set an intention. Your intention can be a mantra, a thought, a prayer for yourself or others, a wish for the planet, or a desirable feeling or experience. Just remember, always send your intention with love and for the highest good of everyone concerned. Words are powerful and put with intention, are magic. Always send with love. And then drink that magic and intention in.
